The Pretend One

Synopsis

A coming of age drama about a 27 year old imaginary friend who lives in an isolated town with his female creator. They’ve been best friends their whole lives and the relationship has always been completely platonic. But when the creator begins to fall for a real man, the imaginary friend realises he’s in love with her. He sets about trying to win her for himself, but it’s obvious that he can’t compete in the real world. He must become real himself.

It was evident that Tony Prescott's film was conceived with love and fervor, an emotion that was palpable in the initial edits that I had the privilege of watching. The nuanced shots, editing, and performances by the actors formed the crux of the narrative, compelling me to adopt a delicate approach to the score. By adopting a minimalist approach, I was able to counterbalance the potent emotions that typically overwhelm the screen, utilizing subtle piano, organ, and guitar notes to reflect the innermost vulnerabilities of the characters. Every sound and layer of the score was executed with imperfections that I deemed to be genuine, which served to enhance the honesty and intimacy of the performances.
